The Perfect Course for Anyone Ready to Learn or Refine Their Soft Pastel Technique

Turn “Limitations” into Strengths

In this step-by-step program, Italian Maestro Enrico De Cenzo walks you through the challenge of handling darker tones.

You’ll discover how to avoid that flat, lifeless look and bring genuine dimension to your subject—all while painting a stunning Doberman in soft pastels.

This brand-new course is ideal if you want to sharpen your skills with soft pastels, especially when it comes to adding depth and vibrancy to dark values.

Since black is almost unavoidable with pastels, it’s essential to know how to use it. The difference between a flat, dull piece and one that leaps to life is enormous.

Through this online journey, Maestro Enrico De Cenzo will walk you through the process of achieving dark tones that truly come alive.

You’ll learn how to make the most of the soft pastel’s inherent qualities so your blacks stay intense yet never look dull, resulting in a realistic and expressive finish.

What Makes This Course One of a Kind?

Soft pastels naturally glow when used for lighter tones.

But if you want deep, bold darks, it can feel like an uphill battle: unlike oil or watercolor, pastels don’t lend themselves easily to creating intense blacks.

Rather than forcing pastels to act like other mediums, it’s essential to fully understand how they work.

Only then will you achieve the results you’re after—without ending up with washed-out or “dead” blacks.

Traditional teaching often says the best, richest darks come from blending colors rather than using straight black.

But because of the way soft pastels layer and their natural opacity, those rules may need rethinking—and sometimes a bit of strategic “rule-breaking.”

Of course, you have to know the rules thoroughly before you can decide when it’s best to bend them.

That’s the real secret to getting wonderfully dynamic dark values.

What You’ll Learn Along the Way

  • How to craft an intense, expressive gaze that immediately reveals your dog’s personality.
  • Why relying on a single “pure” shade for your darkest areas is never a good idea, and how to manage light and shadow for a realistic result.
  • How to make sure the details of the muzzle—nose shape, the gradations around the mouth—look believable without compromising the overall harmony.
  • How to help your main subject stand out from the background, emphasizing its power and elegance.
  • How to achieve reflections that accentuate volume, giving the coat a vibrant, dynamic look.
  • How to highlight those areas that truly make a difference (the eyes, the muscle structure, the outline of the ears) so your subject has an unforgettable presence.
  • How to create a three-dimensional illusion by playing with light, shadow, and smooth transitions, making your dog look almost “real.”
  • And much more...

Hello, I’m Enrico De Cenzo

“My life is a nonstop journey of art, learning, and teaching.”

I’m a researcher and instructor in painting techniques, and I’ve founded numerous online programs focused on drawing, pastels, and watercolor—reaching more than 6,000 students around the globe.

Over time, I’ve held several solo exhibitions in Italy and beyond.

One highlight of my career was having one of my pieces selected for display at the Luxembourg Museum in Poland, during a visit by Pope John Paul II.

My works appear in private collections across Europe, the Americas, and Canada. I’ve showcased my art in New York, where I received multiple awards, including one from the Academy of Fine Arts during an exhibition in Batavia (NY), as well as a personal letter of praise from Hillary Clinton, who received one of my paintings.

I’m passionate about guiding both aspiring and established artists through their creative process, because I genuinely believe that art can change lives.

Below are a few samples of my work:

What People Are Saying About Me

Enrico De Cenzo: Two wonderful works by this humble yet very talented painter.

The first is a portrait that isn’t hyperrealistic, yet it resonates with a captivating echo of fourteenth-century painting, as pure as the magical realism of the nineteen thirties.

The second is a still life painted with a rare clarity of technique and light.

You can sense the energy and passion he poured into these canvases, taking his time without rushing for results or labeling himself a genius—habits that often spoil today’s artists who want everything all at once.

GILBERTO GRILLI

Official biographer of Pietro Annigoni

By provocatively revisiting the earliest (yet never outdated) stages of painting technique,

with a postmodern sensitivity that aligns with the latest artistic explorations, Enrico De Cenzo provides clarity and points to more secure anchors, sturdier foundations, and less fleeting values

things we all crave at a time when the destructive frenzy of our miserable era has driven us to the brink.

With these principles in mind, it’s easy to envision promising developments.

Artist’s perspective... from Maestro Enrico De Cenzo

We thank Dr. Nicola Barbatelli—historian, art expert, and museum director—for introducing us to Maestro De Cenzo and supporting his participation in the group art exhibition held at Villa Fondi, Piano di Sorrento, on July twenty-first.

The painting of Maestro Enrico De Cenzo

which may seem enigmatic at first glance, allows us to venture deep into its imagery and reach its essence, the Archè of life.

His art is renowned and admired worldwide, with exhibitions in various parts of Italy, as well as Poland, Germany, and America. It was in the United States that the young painter received significant recognition, including an award from the Academy of Fine Arts during a show in Batavia, New York, and a letter of praise from Hillary Clinton, who was gifted one of his works.

A Stabiese in New York: it sounds like a hit movie title,

but it’s actually the real-life experience of a Castellammare-based painter whose works are crossing the ocean. Enrico De Cenzo has found success in the United States thanks to Dr. Luigi Palmisano, an Italian-born cardiac surgeon already familiar with his artistic talents, who invited him to create a special show of watercolors in Batavia, a town in New York State just a stone’s throw from Niagara Falls. The response from critics was enthusiastic, especially for the spontaneity of his brushwork. Another exhibition followed in Michigan. What seems to have captivated viewers most are his canine-themed pieces, particularly his portraits of Newfoundland dogs, which he also breeds. Beyond the American dream, Poland has also taken notice of him: one of De Cenzo’s paintings was chosen to be displayed during Pope John Paul II’s most recent visit. Several of his works can be found in both public and private collections in Italy and overseas. Travelling the world is a pleasure that enriches me both personally and professionally,” says De Cenzo, “though it saddens me that I had to leave my hometown to gain the recognition I have.

Monica D'urso My gratitude goes to Maestro Enrico De Cenzo for guiding me, even from a distance. His teachings have been invaluable. He taught me, first and foremost, how to really ‘look’ and observe—something we’re no longer used to—plus all the technical details. There’s still a long way to go, but what matters is knowing I’m on the right path.

"Being One of Enrico’s Students Has Been an Enriching Experience..."

I approached Maestro Enrico De Cenzo hoping to bring back a childhood passion—art—that I used to pursue freely as a little girl.

Destiny led me on another educational path in Brazil. But our core essence never changes. About a year after arriving in Italy, I was fortunate enough to meet Maestro Enrico De Cenzo, who is highly regarded by painters across the Sorrento Peninsula. Through his academic expertise, he showed me the importance of drawing as a foundation for all color media, and his teaching approach helps us develop a keen understanding of color theory. For me, being one of Enrico’s students has been deeply rewarding, not only from a practical standpoint but also for the knowledge that would otherwise take years and years of self-study to acquire. Maestro Enrico De Cenzo makes me feel more confident, and his decisive, precise guidance has taken my art to a level I never dreamed possible. With this newfound confidence, I’m sure I can reach a professional standard.

I’m eternally grateful to Maestro Enrico De Cenzo!
